Wouldn't ya know it, first up for Zack in pools is his teammate, training partner and good buddy, Keith Kan Keith ended up tying for bronze in the tournament (Zack got fourth). As a result, both qualified for the National Championships in July. Keith traveled with us to Columbus, OH for the Nats.
Zack (left) scores a touche on Park City (Utah) Fencing Academy's Yueh-Lin Tsai (Tsai finished right behind Zack in the tournament).
Zack faces South Coast (Costa Mesa, CA) Fencing Center's Greg Procopio (a fencer near my age who's been fencing for 30+ years). Note Procopio's fans in the stands with the "Go Procopig!" sign.
Zack unsuccessfully tries a behind-the head atttack (hard to attack at close range) against the High Desert Fencing Alliance's Lucas Johnson
Zack faces Victor Yin of Le Club Touche (Mountain View, CA), turning to avoid Yin's attack while successfully scoring on his counter attack.
Zack advances an attack using a coupe against Salle D'Asaro (Torrance, CA) Fencing Club's Frederick Sattler.
The redoubtable Devin Donnelly from Silicon Valley Fencer's Club (Los Altos, CA), an USFA referee and Veteran Fencer, avoids Zack's attack and almost colliding with Zack and incurring a "corps-a-corps" (body slam) penalty.
Zack lunges in an attack against Frederick Sattler, who successfully retreats to avoid the touch.
OK, there's no scoring going on here...but I'm guessing Sattler's going to be a little more weary about getting close to Zack after feeling cold, hard French steel right above his knee-cap.
Simultaneous attacks by both Zack and Sattler, and they both miss.
The top six (in truth, seven) finishers in the tournament (L-R): Gold - Andrew Hou, South Coast (Costa Mesa, CA) Fencing Club, Silver- Dillon Cooke, Coer du Leon (San Diego, CA) Fencing Club, T-Bronze - Keith Kan, San Francisco Fencers Club, Bronze-T- Devin Donnelly, Silicon Valley (Los Altos, CA) Fencing Academy, 4th - Zack Hammer - San Francisco Fencers Club, 5th - Morgan Geneste - San Francisco Fencers Club, 6th - Matthew Glover - Halberstadt (San Francisco, CA) Fencing Club. Hou, Cooke and Hammer all qualified for the National Championships as a result of their finishes in this tournament.
