On April 26, 2014, Zack competed in the California State High School Fencing Championships as the #1 seed for the Men's Varsity competition. He went undefeated in pools and ended up facing this club teammate Aiden Chu, yet again, in the final bout (having faced, and defeated, him the previous week in the semi-final bout of the CIF Section Championships).
Compared to the club fencing circuit (those local, regional and national tournaments put on by the US Fencing Association or Int'l tournaments directed by the Federation International d'Escrime), high school fencing is less competitive. But it is quite vigorous in San Francisco (where Zack attends school) and is very much on the upswing as the whole sport is gathering great momentum in the US right now as the US Men's and Women's teams are making quite a mark with their accomplishments in World Cup and Olympic events. Zack's participation on the US Team, garnering a silver medal in the Pan American Zonal Championships in the Individual Cadet Men's Foil competition and his silver medal in the team competition at the Junior Olympics made him the target to beat coming into this State Championship. Fortunately, he was able to prevail!
